Professor Gardner trained in Orthopaedics in Birmingham spine unit before becoming the National Spine Fellow in Leeds for 18 months prior to his appointment at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.

During that time he undertook a short fellowships with Professor Lenke in St Louis USA, Dr Jeszenszky in Zurich and Mr Atsirikos in Edinburgh.
