Inclusion at The ROH

Inclusion really matters at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. Our Trust is a place where patients and our team can be authentically themselves.

In 2021/22 we were ranked the most inclusive NHS organisation and 15th most inclusive employer overall across the UK.

This league table complied by Inclusive Companies identifies best practice across all strands of diversity – age, disability, gender, LGBT, race, faith and religion - and we're incredibly proud to be included in it.

What makes us inclusive?

There are a number of important initiatives, partners and staff forums that help us to ensure that our culture is open, inclusive and supportive.

We are a Disability Confident Leader which ensures our organisation is a leader in recruitment and our team recevie all the support they need to flourish. We work with AccessAble to ensure visitors of all abilities can visit us with confidence. Our Staff Network 'ABLE' is helping to remove the stigma associated with hidden and visible disability.

We are a Stonewall Champion, we celebrate Pride, LGBTQ+ hisotry month each February and we wear our NHS rainbow badges with pride! Our LGBTQ+ staff forum is also helping to support our team and encourage visibility and acceptance.

10% of our workforce are trained as Mental Health First Aiders which helps give the team and our patients confidence that there is always someone ready to listen.

We have undertaken lots of work to support people going through the menopause, including introducing lightweight uniforms, putting on awareness sessions and improving training.

We celebrate diversity in our workforce too, with events and celebrations around cultural and religious milestones like Black History Month. Our Multi Minority Ethnic Group (MMEG) are doing incredible work to further our inclusion agenda, including the recent launch of a mentoring scheme.

Never complacent

While we have made progress, we will never be complacent about inclusion. We will continue to make improvements, tackling where we can, the systemic causes of inequality and being role models for better practice.

We will support visitors to feel comfortable, included and supported. We will support our team to be authentically themselves and thrive at work in a culture of openness and pride.
