Accessibility statement for the website of The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital
This accessibility statement applies to www.roh.nhs.uk
This website is run by The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:
- change colours, contrast levels and fonts using browser or device settings
- zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
- navigate most of the website using a keyboard or speech recognition software
- listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)
We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.
AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.
How accessible this website is
We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:
- you cannot modify the line height or spacing of text
- most PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software
- live video streams do not have captions
- there’s a limit to how far you can magnify the map on our ‘contact us’ page

Enforcement procedure
The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the ‘accessibility regulations’). Technical information about this website’s accessibility
The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.
Compliance status
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the exemptions listed below.
Non-accessible content
Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations
Some images do not have a text alternative, so people using a screen reader cannot access the information. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content).
We plan to add text alternatives for all images by Spring 2025. When we publish new content we’ll make sure our use of images meets accessibility standards.
We are aware that PDF Documents do not currently meet:
- WCAG 1.4.3 Contrast
- WCAG 1.3.1 Info and Relationships: Tables
- WCAG 1.1.1 Non-text content
Downloadable documents, including but not limited to PDF documents and Word files, are sometimes published on our website in order to:
- Meet governance requirements or legislation for official or internal use, often when printed. This includes corporate documents
- Specifically to be printed, rather than for use on the web, but published online as helpful content or to meet certain regulatory requirements. This may include newsletters and annual reports, for example
- For use by a specific audience where web accessibility is not a requirement due to the intended use of the file. This may include referral forms for GP practices to print themselves, for example
- For use in the management of patients or provision of services, where the author may not have the technical or design skills required to make the document accessible but the information of resources may be urgently required, for example during the COVID-19 pandemic
We are aware that the June Board papers available here: Notice of Trust Board Meeting in public on Wednesday 7th June 2023 (roh.nhs.uk) have the following issues:
- WCAG 1.4.3 Contrast
- WCAG 2.4.2 Page titled
- WCAG 3.1.1 Language of Page
- WCAG 1.3.1 Info and Relationships: Tables
- WCAG 1.1.1 Non-text content
We will review further PDF documents before publication to this website and will publish content in accessible formats where possible.
Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations
PDFs and other documents
Our site contains a number of PDFs.
Where these are no longer being updated, we do not intend to recreate them in an accessible version, as this would be a dispoportionate burden.
in addition, the accessibility regulations don't require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services.
Scope:
This assessment relates to PDF documents on our corporate and statutory information pages.
Burden
Our assessment of the burden of making these PDFs and other documents in our corporate and statutory information pages into accessible HTML formats is that:
There are over 300 such papers, running to over 45,000 pages.
Each document would require a number of hours of work to be recreated in a fully accessible version (estimated based on extensive experience of converting the active documents at between 2 and 30 hours per document, depending on length and complexity, plus any required sign-off).
Many of the contents of the documents are officially published (e.g. Official or National Statistics) and publishing a new version requires detailed checking, a formal sign-off process, and submitting a new official version to the national statistician.
Many of the documents contain complex elements which are difficult to retrospectively convert, such as detailed tables, graphs, and diagrams.
If you need help accessing information in an accessible way, please contact us by emailing
Live video
We do not plan to add captions to live video streams as live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations.
Where we host other types of video content on our website, captions will be added.
What we’re doing to improve accessibility
