Alice Rossington, from Grantham, Lincs, celebrated the start of her bone cancer remission two weeks ago with an inspiring 60ft walk. Watch the video here:
The video of her heroic walk two weeks ago after treatment for a rare and aggressive bone cancer, and a remarkable reconstruction of her leg, has become an internet viral phenomenon. Her courage as she fought to reclaim her future captured the heart of the nation. Hundreds of thousands of strangers have now watched her extraordinary walk online, and Radio 2 breakfast show DJ Chris Evans brought the story to his nine million listeners by dedicating an entire show to her.
Our amazing surgeons at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital helped to save Alice's leg. They cut out the tumour and replaced her femur with titanium rods from just below her hip to her shin. She still has her own kneecap for cosmetic reasons, but the load of the leg is carried by a hinged metal joint.
Alice hopes to be walking without crutches in six months to a year and is determined to be as fit as she can in time for January, when she expects to take up the school place waiting for her at Kesteven and Grantham Girls’ School – where Margaret Thatcher was once a pupil. Alice nailed the tough 11-plus entry exam while suffering from cancer. She also plans to dance again and said;
‘One day I hope to dance again. That’s my aim, to be back in my costume, wearing my make-up, on stage with my friends. My dance teacher has offered to get me back into her studio as soon as I am able. It will be for stretching and strengthening exercises at first, but I am dreaming of the day I can dance again.’
