ROH surgeon features on new kids TV show

The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital (ROH) has been featured in a new Sky children’s TV programme.

'WOW!', a spin-off of the popular 'FYI: For Your Info', is a news programme for kids, presented by kids, and is focused on innovation in science and technology. In episode 2, which looks at robotics, we see 10-year-old presenter Brayden Bent visit the Trust to find out out how robots are being used at ROH. The crew filmed a hip replacement in theatres, with Consultant Surgeon Prof. Edward Davis and his team, assisted by the Mako robot.

The advanced Stryker Mako robotic arm-assisted surgery transforms the way joint replacement surgery is performed, enabling the team of highly-trained surgeons at ROH to operate with even more accuracy.

ROH was the first NHS hospital in the UK to offer Mako robotic-arm assisted surgery during hip and knee replacements to patients on its Woodlands Suite.

Patient Nick Roche

Patient Nick Roche, who underwent the procedure, said: “The whole experience being interviewed by Braydon, who was brilliant, and the film crew in my hospital room was enjoyable and I’m looking forward to seeing the end product. The film crew even came to my house to get an interview post-operation.

“My treatment at the hospital was fantastic from the moment I entered the ward until my discharge, I was made to feel very comfortable. All the nursing staff were very professional, nothing was too much bother for them.  Professor Davis was first class and made me feel at ease throughout the time leading up to my procedure and once I had my operation done.”

'WOW!' is available to watch on Sky TV, the Sky Kids app (available in the app store) and online here.
