David Dunlop
Mr Dunlop was appointed as a Consultant to the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in 2001.
He qualified from Birmingham Medical School in 1989. His basic surgical training was completed in Manchester and the North West. At this stage he had an interest in the treatment of trauma as well as abdominal surgery. His interest in joint replacement surgery developed through his higher surgical training in Orthopaedics in the West Midlands, and a specialist Fellowship in Vancouver.
His one year Arthroplasty Fellowship in Vancouver furthered his experience in all aspects of hip and knee replacement surgery and in particular provided invaluable experience in ‘Redo’ or Revision surgery whilst working with some of the world’s most eminent hip surgeons.
Vancouver was also the catalyst for a specific interest in the management, prevention and treatment of infection in joint replacements, and this interest has developed in his subsequent practice. Through his role on the Infection Control committee he supported increased surveillance of Surgical Site infections and the work of the Infection Control Committee has led to a significant and on-going improvement in this area.
Initially Mr Dunlop’s practice was split between knee and hip surgery, however since 2011 he has concentrated on hip surgery only. He is predominantly an Arthroplasty surgeon and performs hip replacements, resurfacings and revisions. He does not perform hip arthroscopy or osteotomy surgery although the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital has other specialists with specific training in these areas.
Mr Dunlop uses a variety of hip implants ranging from hip resurfacings to complex specialised revision prostheses and proximal femoral replacements for occasional cases with severe bone loss. Having access to specialist equipment and implants enables surgeons from within the West Midlands and beyond to refer complex cases to him for treatment. This is particularly frequent for the management of periprosthetic fractures which are another of his areas of interest and specialisation.
He has been actively involved with the National Joint Registry (NJR) since it was established in 2003 and is currently the NJR Regional Clinical coordinator for the West Midlands.
From 2008 for a period of three and a half years he was Clinical Director for Arthroplasty surgery. He was a member of the Trusts Executive Management Team for a year from 2011.
Within the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital he has a role as an Appraiser for Consultant colleagues and Junior Medical staff. He acts as an Educational Supervisor for trainees in General Practice and Specialist Registrars in Orthopaedics.
Mr Dunlop is a Reviewer for The Bone and Joint Journal, the leading UK academic orthopaedic journal. He is a member of the British Hip Society as well as the British Orthopaedic Association.
Family life is important and he enjoys spending time with his wife, and two daughters. He has had a life-long interest in sport both as a competitor and a spectator. He follows the Irish rugby team, the English cricket team, athletics, tennis and golf. He enjoys skiing and running and with respect to the latter he takes part in charity and non-charity events across the West Midlands each year. He is an occasional golfer and remains convinced that one day he will be better than his current scores suggest.
