Vicky Clewer

Head of Infection Prevention and Control, Tissue Viability and Deputy Director of Infection Prevention and Control (DDIPC)

Vicky is a Registered Nurse with a background in surgical nursing, having begun her career in Neurosurgery at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham before specialising in Infection Prevention and Control (IPC). She has since developed extensive experience across both adult and paediatric acute healthcare settings, building a strong foundation in patient safety, quality improvement, and clinical leadership.

In her current role, Vicky leads on both Infection Prevention and Control and Tissue Viability—two interlinked specialties that are fundamental to patient safety and harm-free care. She is committed to reducing the risk of healthcare-associated infections and pressure ulcers through proactive, evidence-based strategies and multidisciplinary collaboration.

Why IPC and Tissue Viability?
Vicky explains:

"Infection Prevention and Control is rooted in patient safety. Preventing harm from healthcare-associated infections is everyone’s responsibility. It’s vital not only for ensuring patients receive the safest possible care, but also for protecting the wellbeing of our healthcare staff so they can continue to deliver excellent care. Tissue Viability is a natural extension of this—maintaining skin integrity and preventing pressure ulcers are critical components of safe, effective care. Both specialties are dynamic, impactful, and grounded in quality improvement. No two days are the same, but the highlight of my role is collaborating with the entire multidisciplinary team—from domestic staff and porters to senior clinicians and Trust executives—to drive continuous improvement and ensure a safe environment for our patients and colleagues.”
