Professor Gardner has worked at the Trust as a consultant spine surgeon with an interest in spine deformity, both paediatric and adult, since January 2009 following orthopaedic training in the West Midlands and the National Spine Fellowship in Leeds.
Since becoming a consultant he has completed a PhD from the University of Birmingham, studying the 3D shape of the back and torso of adolescents with and without scoliosis which was awarded in 2020.
He has been the Research and Development Director for the Trust since 2018 and leads an active department that facilitates research from 'bench to bedside' covering the span of basic science to clinical trials. His personal research work has been funded by the National Institute for Health Research, the Medical Research Council and UKRI amongst others.
He is active in the development of future clinical academics, representing Orthopaedics in the academic training programmes across the West Midlands.
In 2024, he became a full Professor at Aston University in his role as Professor of Clinical Practice in Orthopaedic Surgery supporting research between Aston and the ROH.
He is the speciality editor for spine at the Bone and Joint Journal.
