Week of Physiotherapy (under 25)

A week of Physiotherapy has been booked for you following your Orthopaedic Oncology Surgery

What does the week involve?

During the week of physiotherapy, you will be seen as an outpatient. You will have one to two hydrotherapy (pool based) sessions and one land-based session daily Monday-Friday (sessions are subject to change). The week involves rehabilitation specific to your individual needs and is under the supervision of a team of physiotherapists with experience in treating patients following oncology surgery. The week will begin with an initial assessment in the hydrotherapy department where your current level of function will be assessed. Here you will discuss specific goals with the physiotherapist that you would like to achieve for the week ahead.

Where can I stay?

Unless you are local and can travel in daily, you will need to book accommodation for the week. There are several local hotels and B&B’s you can book.

How do I get to the hospital?

If you are unable to make your own way to the hospital, you need to arrange hospital transport from your home, to arrive on the Monday before 1pm, and leave on the Friday after 12pm. You can do this via your local hospital transport team. If you are unsure how to book this, please speak with your GP.

You can arrange for taxis to drop you in and pick you up each day from your accommodation, or there are local transport links.

What happens at the end of the week?

A final assessment will be carried out in the hydrotherapy department on the Friday where you will receive an exercise programme specific to your needs. If you have already started physiotherapy at a local hospital, your assessment will include sending updated information to your local team. If you haven’t yet started physiotherapy locally, a referral will be sent to the hospital of your choice.

Can I bring a relative?

If you are under 18 then you must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the initial assessment and possibly for the duration of your stay (this can be discussed during your first session). If you are 18 and over you can bring one relative or carer if needed. This person may not be able to accompany you during all of your treatment sessions. There will be staff available to assist you in the hydrotherapy changing area if needed.
