Phil's story

"It's changed my life"

With a 28-year career as a firefighter, Phil had always led an active life. Outside of his career Phil was passionate about playing sport and like many sports-people experienced wear and tear in both knees from arthritis. Phil chose ROH for revision knee surgery.

"It’s changed my life. I’m still like a young man. I’m a 24 year-old 67 year old! I feel there’s nothing I can’t do!"

Tor's story

"I feel so fortunate"

Tor’s has been a patient at ROH for over 40 years. Tor’s condition is Maffucci syndrome, which is a disorder that affects the bones and skin.

“I feel so fortunate my consultants do understand the condition. I have experienced the best care and have had dealings with several departments and couldn't have got through my surgeries or recovery without the input of those departments and their staff.”

Neil's story

"I’m proud to have competed the Spartan Beast"

Neil came to the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital following a severe back injury which left him in significant pain.

"At the beginning of the injury I would have never even contemplated any form of exercise, let alone some of the things I can do now, as it was hard just to walk a mile to work or to pick up a saucepan to cook my food. These days I’m proud to have competed the Spartan Beast and several half marathons, but only because of years of hard work and commitment to my physiotherapy exercises and conditioning to get stronger."

David's story

"I’m a carer for my wife so it’s important I keep my health"

David originally had a hip replacement with us in 2008, but came back to the ROH recently for help with a worn out joint.

“I wasn’t nervous before the surgery, as I knew a bit of what to expect, but I was apprehensive. I’m a carer for my wife so it’s important I keep my health. I started doing the exercises 30 days before surgery which is suggested and I think that’s had a big part in my recovery. Four weeks after the operation I was down to one walking stick and now I’m walking on average 6,000 steps a day which I’m really pleased with."

Kath's story

"I got a life I never lived before"

When pain holds you back from the life you love, it can be incredibly difficult to remain positive. Kath knows this feeling all too well, with the effects of Osteoarthritis in her hip impacting her daily life. Kath was treated at the Woodlands Suite – Private Care at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.

“It took months to recover, but I got a life I never lived before, a life where I was free to garden, exercise and swim pain free.”

You can ask your GP to refer you to the ROH.

Here's how.

Step 1: GP appointment

Make an appointment with your GP to discuss your pain and what treatment options are available to you.

Step 2: Discuss your options

Your GP should take you through a checklist with you to help you understand your treatment options. This might include physiotherapy, pain management, or surgery.

Step 3: Discuss providers

Your GP should give you options about where your treatment can take place. You should think about waiting times, patient experience, surgeon expertise, clinical outcomes and distance from home. This is a shared decision. You have a right to choose.
