The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital (ROH), in partnership with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and College Green Medical Practice, successfully hosted the South Birmingham MSK Community Appointment Day (CAD) on October 22, 2024, at Cocks Moor Woods Leisure Centre. This innovative event offered tailored, accessible support to patients awaiting routine physiotherapy, demonstrating the power of collaboration and community engagement.
The CAD welcomed 259 patients, supported by 48 staff members and 25 representatives from 12 local organisations. Attendees benefited from physiotherapist and podiatrist consultations, self-management workshops on osteoarthritis and chronic pain, and access to a community hub offering advice on wellbeing and long-term condition management.
Outcomes highlighted the event’s impact: 13.9% of patients were discharged, and 25.1% were placed on Patient Initiated Follow-Up (PIFU), reducing routine appointments and enabling patients to manage their conditions more independently. Patient satisfaction reached 90%, with 75% reporting increased confidence in managing their health.
Despite a non-attendance rate of 31%, logistical and engagement challenges provided valuable insights for future improvement. Recommendations include refining referral criteria, enhancing patient preparation, and strengthening ties with community organisations to maximise impact.
This CAD showcased the potential of personalised, community-based care to reduce waiting times, empower patients, and address health inequalities. Future iterations will build on this success, continuing to bring primary and secondary care together to deliver accessible, meaningful support for musculoskeletal health.
