A specialist hospital in Birmingham has become the first in Europe to use new technology that can revolutionise how surgery on the spine is performed.

The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital (ROH) will use the Pulse platform from NuVasive; a system which helps surgeons offer quicker, more precise, and safer surgery.

Operating on the spine is very complicated. Surgeons use their expert judgement to balance invasiveness and efficiency with safety.

The Pulse platform from NuVasive helps by bringing all the technology needed to perform spine surgery into a single platform. This allows the surgeon to operate more quickly and efficiently. It also means that surgery is less invasive and radiation exposure from imaging can be reduced by up to 80%. This means that patients can recover faster and enjoy better surgical outcomes.

Mr Andrew Young, Consultant Spinal Surgeon at ROH said,

We hope to use it to reduce the length of time people stay in hospital and reduce any complications. This technology puts the ROH at the forefront of spinal surgery in the UK and we’re excited about the benefits it will offer patients.”

The Pulse platform was approved for use at ROH in August 2021.

It will be used in partnership with Siemens Healthineers Cios Spin Mobile 3D C-Arm, which allows 2D and 3D imaging capability to help surgeons plan more effectively.
