Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Appoints Matthew Hartland as Interim Chief Executive Officer

The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (ROH) is pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Hartland as Interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Matthew will join ROH in October 2024.

Matthew brings with him over 30 years of experience in the health sector, particularly within NHS finance and executive leadership roles, and is poised to lead the Trust through this interim period.

Matthew joins ROH following the appointment of Jo Williams, the current CEO, as the Interim Chief Executive Officer at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust. Jo’s leadership over the past five years has been instrumental in driving strong performance, high patient and staff satisfaction scores, and fostering a values-based culture that prioritises well-being and compassionate care.

Matthew Hartland’s extensive experience in the health sector makes him exceptionally well-suited for this role. His career has spanned various leadership positions, including his most recent role as Chief Executive of Dudley Integrated Health & Care Trust, alongside Chief Operating Officer of the Integrated Care Board (ICB) and previously Deputy CEO of the Black Country and West Birmingham Clinical Commissioning Group.

“It is a privilege to have been appointed into this interim role and I’m excited to maintain progress at the ROH” Matthew said.

“It is a special hospital with an excellent reputation. My focus will be maintaining high-quality care and positive performance.”

The Trust Board at ROH is confident that Matthew’s strategic leadership will support the Trust to continue delivering outstanding care, and will provide opportunities for the hospital to build new partnerships for the benefit of local communities.

Jo Williams, who will be stepping into her new interim role in September 2024, has expressed her full support for Matthew's appointment, stating, "Matthew’s experience and commitment to improving health outcomes for local communities make him an ideal leader for ROH. I am confident that under his leadership, the Trust will continue to thrive and play an important role in the Birmingham and Solihull healthcare system.

The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital remains dedicated to providing high-quality services and life-changing care for the benefit of our patients, communities.
