Senior Research Fellow | Academic Department of Military Nursing, Ministry of Defence

Cdr Alan Brockie QARNNS

Cdr Brockie is a Nursing Officer in Queen Alexandra’s Royal Naval Nursing Service, currently based at the Academic Department of Military Nursing in Birmingham. He has had a varied career in the Armed Forces, serving at home, abroad, and on operations in both regular and reserve Army and Navy units. He is an experienced operating theatre nurse, and a burgeoning bioethicist. Pondering the ethical dilemmas encountered in field hospitals on operations in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan prompted him to undertake a Master’s degree in Healthcare Law & Ethics to broaden his knowledge and understanding, and was awarded his LLM in 2014. Still contemplating military nurses’ experience of ethical decision-making on combat and humanitarian deployments, their moral character and values, and ethical self-awareness, Cdr Brockie has recently defended his PhD thesis examining those very subjects at viva examination.

Senior Physiotherapist and PhD student, The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital

Susanna Tucker

Susanna qualified as a physiotherapist from University of Birmingham in 2017 with a first-class honours degree. Susanna is currently completing her PhD exploring post-operative rehabilitation following spinal fusion for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) alongside her clinical work as a senior physiotherapist at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital Birmingham. Susanna has a varied MSK clinical caseload but with a special interest in scoliosis and spinal pain. As part of her academic studies Susanna has published work exploring post-operative return to sports, exercise, and physical activity as well as presented at several national conferences. Most recently she completed an international e-Delphi study, the first international consensus on post-operative rehabilitation following spinal fusion for AIS. Alongside her clinical work and academic studies Susanna has also worked as a teaching fellow at University of Birmingham and is currently supervising masters dissertation students.

Genomic Research Nurse, The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital

Beulah Dilipen

Beulah completed a Master’s in Nursing and worked as an educator in a college affiliated to Dr.M.G.R Medical university, in India and is currently doing a Master’s in Genomic Medicine at the University of Birmingham. Following the success of the ground-breaking 100000 genomes project and establishment of Genomic Medicine Service (GMS) by the Genomic England, Beulah was appointed as the Genomic Research Nurse at ROH in 2023, to embed the Genomic service as a standard of care under the leadership of Mr. Stevenson and supported by the Bone Cancer Research Trust (BCRT) to offer WGS test to patients with suspected sarcomas and carcinoma of unknown primary. Beulah describes the past two years as being a challenging yet rewarding experience. She is proud to be part of this piece of work.

Nikki Brockie

Nikki has over 23 years’ worth of experience in nursing, clinical and operational leadership and management. She has held senior positions across the UK as a Matron in both Critical Care and Medicine, as a Service Lead in Radiology at Heartlands Hospital, as a General Manager in Cardiac & Respiratory Services in Gloucester and latterly as a Health Education England (HEE) funded project manager in the biggest NHS trust in the South West.

Gareth Stephens

Gareth is a physiotherapist by background with 20 years clinical experience, and current Head of Research, Audit and Development at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. He is a PhD student at Edge Hill University; an Honorary Research Fellow at University of Birmingham and has successfully contributed to approximately £2 million of current research grant funding.

Lucie Gosling

Lucie works as a Consultant Physiotherapist specialising in Young Adult Hip Pain, and also oversees the peripheral Musculoskeletal Service at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham. She is a co-founder of and co-chairs the UK Hip Physio Network @UKHipNetwork which links Physiotherapists and researchers at the Young Adult Hip Centres around the UK, providing education, collaborative projects and research dissemination. Lucie completed an MSc in Advancing Clinical practice in 2014 and Masters to Doctorate bridging programme 2018. She is an MACP tutor and lectures at The University of Birmingham.

Research Nurse

Dr Louise Mew

Louise is a research nurse at Milton Keynes University Hospital (MKUH) and leads the T&O, ICU, Covid19 & Influenza research portfolios. She completed her PhD in 2024 and was awarded an NIHR pre application support grant beginning in December 2024 to further develop her current research proposals in the speciality of orthopaedics. Louise is about to start a new role as Orthopaedic ANP at MKUH. 

Consultant Clinical Scientist and Director of Hospital Research Laboratory

Mark Garvey

Mark is a Consultant Clinical Scientist in Microbiology and the Clinical Director of Infection Prevention and Control for the Infection Prevention and Control Service at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. Mark is also the Director of the Hospital Infection Research Laboratory that investigates hospital infections. Mark is also a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham. Mark’s research interests include infection prevention and control and water microbiology. Mark has over 80 peer reviewed journal articles in the field of infection prevention and control and has given over 100 national/international presentations on various infection prevention and control topics.

We are delighted to invite speakers to submit abstracts for presentations at our upcoming Orthopaedic Nursing and Allied Health Professionals (AHP) Conference taking place on 25 June 2025. This conference provides a unique platform for orthopaedic nurses and AHPs to inspire, inform, and engage with a multidisciplinary team passionate about research and patient safety.

Speaker abstract submission guidelines

Abstract Focus:

Your abstract should align with the conference theme, Advancing Care and Patient Safety Through Research, Innovation and Excellence and address one or more of the following areas:

  • Groundbreaking orthopaedic and musculoskeletal research in nursing or AHP practice.
  • Innovations in patient safety and quality improvement.
  • Integrating evidence-based practices to enhance care delivery.
  • Leadership and collaboration in driving safety and research excellence.
  • Policy and future trends in research and patient safety.

Abstract requirements:

  • Title: A concise and engaging title (max 15 words).
  • Summary: A clear overview of the proposed topic (250–300 words).
  • Learning Objectives: 2–3 takeaways that attendees will gain from the presentation.
  • Relevance: Explain how your topic addresses the conference theme and audience interests.
  • Bio: A brief professional biography (150 words), including relevant experience and expertise
