Clinical observerships connect ROH with the world

Jenna M. Gonzalez, RN, a Sarcoma Nurse Specialist from the Philippines spent a month at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital for an Observership. Find out more about her experience in her story below.

"For the month of August, I had the unique opportunity to partake in an observership at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham, United Kingdom. As a Nurse Specialist from the Philippines, this experience was not just enriching, but also eye-opening, providing me with exposure to a diverse range of specialized areas, including the theatre, outpatient department (OPD), interventional radiology, and multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.

During my time at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, I worked closely with the Macmillan nurses, who served as a beacon of inspiration with their exceptional guidance and support. Their unwavering dedication to patient care was genuinely inspiring, and I gained invaluable insights into the holistic approach they employ when managing patients with complex needs.

I observed advanced surgical techniques in the theatre and witnessed the seamless collaboration between the surgical team and nurses. The attention to detail and precision required in this setting reinforced the importance of continuous professional development in nursing practice.

The outpatient department (OPD) offered a different perspective. There, I observed the management of pre-and post-operative care. I was particularly impressed by the patient-centered approach and the emphasis on effective communication between healthcare providers and patients, which ensured that patients were well-informed and comfortable throughout their treatment journey.

Interventional radiology was another area where I gained significant knowledge. Observing the minimally invasive procedures and the role of nurses in supporting these interventions highlighted the importance of specialized training and the need for interdisciplinary teamwork.

Lastly, participating in the multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings allowed me to appreciate the collaborative efforts involved in patient care. I observed how specialists come together to discuss and formulate comprehensive care plans, ensuring that every aspect of the patient's health is considered.

Overall, this observership has been an invaluable experience, broadening my understanding of specialized nursing care in a leading orthopaedic hospital. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from the Macmillan nurses and other healthcare professionals at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. The knowledge and skills I have acquired will undoubtedly enhance my practice as a Nurse Specialist in the Philippines."
