Whether you are an aspiring actor, have great people skills or just want to help out with admin, there is a voluntary post to suit you at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital (ROH).
We are on the look-out for dedicated volunteers who are able to help us with a variety of tasks, including helping medical students learn by pretending to be patients.
Simulated patients spend their time being examined by fourth year medical students, sometimes using a specific scenario, and then feeding back how they got on. It’s not a job for the bashful, as these volunteers often have to strip down to their underwear.
Peter Brookes, who has previously featured in Midsomer Murders, Casualty and Shaun of the Dead, explains why he applies his acting skills to the ROH: “I really enjoy helping people. It’s great encouraging young doctors to improve and help give them confidence. I find it very rewarding. We have a lot of fun too – all the volunteers get on really well together.”
Other volunteering opportunities include:
- Ward helpers – making sure patients have drinks and biscuits when they need them.
- Patient survey helpers – supporting patients share their views on the care they receive.
- Clerical workers – supporting the hospital by doing simple administrative tasks.
- iPad users – to support patients filling out online questionnaires.
- Gardeners – to help us maintain the beautiful grounds we have here in Northfield.
- Greeters – to welcome new patients to the hospital in Outpatients and help them find their way to the right place.
Volunteer co-ordinator Gail Booth said: “Volunteering is a great way to expand your skills, meet new people, and help others. Here at the ROH we have a fantastic group of volunteers, and we’d love to welcome more to the team. Volunteers make a huge contribution to our work and we offer full training and support, and can be flexible with hours and days worked.”
