The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital is celebrating after being named as an Elective Surgical Hub

The accreditation is a marker of exceptional quality and has been awarded by Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT), a national programme designed to improve medical care within the NHS.

Elective Surgical Hubs are an important part of the NHS's plan to increase capacity and to offer hundreds of thousands more patients' quicker access to common procedures. To be accredited as an Elective Surgical Hub is a significant achievement and reassures patients that they are being treated in a centre of excellence.

The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital is the first Trust in Birmingham to receive this accreditation.

Jo Williams, Chief Executive at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital said,

“This accreditation is a marker of incredibly high standards and a testament to the hard work of our team.  I am incredibly proud of the care we provide and being named an Elective Surgical Hub will enable us to treat more patients across Birmingham, and beyond.”

The GIRFT team said: “It was a privilege to meet such a committed, talented and enthusiastic team. They shared examples and information on good practice and were open and transparent during interviews and focus sessions. It was delightful to meet the teams who are supporting the elective
recovery process for this system and to better understand the pressures and daily challenges they face.”

About Elective Surgical Hubs

Elective Surgical Hubs bring together skills and expertise of staff under one roof – helping to reduce waiting times. Improving quality and efficiency also means that patients have shorter waits for surgery and are more likely to go home on the same day. Hubs have ring-fenced facilities and staff, and operate at an exceptionally high level, providing outstanding patient care. Hubs were initially set up by GIRFT as a response to the pandemic to maintain elective surgery.
