Wolverhampton’s first Black heritage trail launches with ROH colleague at the helm

Wolverhampton is set to launch its first Black Heritage Trail this October, celebrating and preserving the city’s rich Black history for future generations – and a member of the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital team is helping to make it happen.
We are proud to share that Rachel Davis, DDaT PMO Support Lead at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, has been leading on this important community project. Rachel has played a key role in the relaunch of the Black History and Heritage website and the creation of Wolverhampton’s first Black Heritage Trail. This pioneering project brings together local historians like David Bennett, community leaders and national partners to showcase Black contributions to the city and beyond.
Rachel comments: “The Black Heritage Trail and website relaunch is about honouring those whose stories have gone untold, celebrating the strength of our community, and inspiring future generations to stand firm with pride. For me, it is also a tribute to my dear friend Vanessa Brown OBE, whose spirit of giving back continues to guide this work. With the trail and the relaunch of the Black Heritage and History website, we are creating a legacy that preserves our past, amplifies voices like those documented by historian David Bennett, and ensures our community’s stories are seen, heard, and celebrated.”
The trail will officially launch at a special event at Wolverhampton Art Gallery on Thursday 31 October (6–9pm). The venue has a long history with the Black Arts Movement, making it a fitting location for this important celebration. Tickets are free and open to all here.
This project is an inspiring example of how ROH colleagues are making a difference both within and beyond the NHS, and we are delighted to celebrate Rachel’s leadership and contribution to this historic milestone.
Black History Month 2025
October marks Black History Month in the UK. The theme this year is “Standing Firm in Power and Pride”, a powerful tribute to the resilience, strength and unwavering commitment to progress that defines the Black community across the globe. The theme recognises the profound contributions of Black leaders, activists and pioneers who have shaped history, while also looking towards a future of continued empowerment, unity, and growth.
