Birmingham City Council cycle route plans - Have your say

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Birmingham City Council published the Emergency Birmingham Transport Plan and is now bringing forward a number of temporary transport projects to support a low carbon, clean air recovery.
In collaboration with partners across the West Midlands, they have been awarded funding (Emergency Active Travel Fund Tranche 1) to design and deliver schemes to support more walking and cycling. The funding criteria from Department for Transport is clear that the council need to deliver pop-up and temporary interventions to create an environment that is safe for both walking and cycling, and demonstrate that they have ‘swift and meaningful plans to reallocate road space to cyclists and pedestrians, including on strategic corridors’.
They have now developed some designs and would welcome your comments to
Please find attached the latest designs for Selly Oak to Northfield (A38 corridor). This scheme proposes a two-way light segregated cycle route or ‘pop-up cycle lanes’ between the Birmingham Cycle Revolution A38 route and Selly Oak Triangle. The route continues south of the Triangle site along proposed bus and cycle lanes. Key features shown on the attached plan:
- Grange Road - proposed cycle contraflow lane to connect High Street with University of Birmingham A38 cycle route
- High Street – proposed 20mph speed limit and two-way segregated cycle route on northern side between Grange Road and Selly Oak Railway Station, constructed by temporary buildout of footway into the carriageway. Bus stop relocation near Aldi to reduce conflicts with vehicles turning out of Hubert Road
- Bristol Road between Selly Oak Railway Station and Chapel Lane – proposed 20mph speed limit, mandatory cycle lanes and bus ‘boarder’ buildout on east side near the Touchbase Pears building
- A38 Bristol Road between Langleys Road, Selly Oak and Northfield High Street – proposed 30mph speed limit and 24-hour bus, cycle and taxi lanes (except section with parking outside Orthopaedic Hospital)
