JointCare goes from strength to strength

An innovative hip and knee pathway developed at Birmingham’s Royal Orthopaedic Hospital (ROH) has been nominated for a national award.
JointCare, which was developed at the Northfield hospital, is a modern hip and knee replacement service for NHS patients. At the heart of the JointCare programme is patient education which helps people prepare for their procedure and rehabilitation. Patients work with physiotherapists just hours after their surgery as the evidence suggests this aids recovery. The service is helping many hip and knee replacement patients to get home just 24 – 48 hours after their operation. It brings together an experienced and highly skilled team. The goal with JointCare is to provide seamless, efficient care and have patients healthy and doing the things they enjoy as quickly as possible.
The ROH is the only hospital in the UK where JointCare is available. Patient feedback for JointCare has been excellent and the service has been bolstered by recent events organised by the Trust where patients and their families were invited to catch up and share their experiences.
In addition to positive feedback from patients, JointCare has now been recognised by the Forward Healthcare Awards, who have shortlisted the programme in the Acute or Specialist Services Redesign category this year. The awards celebrate and share great work across health and care with a new range of categories including Excellence in Communication and Engagement, Patient Digital Participation, Service Redesign and Innovation. The winners will be decided on 25th September.
The nomination comes just days after the hospital was nominated for Acute or Specialist Trust of the Year at the Health Service Journal (HSJ) Awards 2019, the most coveted accolade in UK healthcare.
JointCare Project Manager Alicia Stanton says: “The JointCare team is thrilled with this nomination. Improving the quality of care for orthopaedic patients drives everything we do, and to be recognised in this way is a real boost for the whole team. We hope to build on the fantastic work JointCare has already achieved and continue to improve outcomes for our patients.”
