We are delighted to announce that The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (ROH) has been nominated for a top national award.
The Trust has been shortlisted in the category of Acute or Specialist Trust of the Year at the Health Service Journal (HSJ) Awards, one of the most highly-contested prizes in healthcare.
The annual awards celebrate innovation and best practice across a number of categories with this year’s winners to be announced at a ceremony in London on Wednesday 6 November. The Acute or Specialist Trust of the Year Award recognises trusts which are offering excellent, patient-centric care built on strong engagement between clinicians within and beyond the organisation. In particular, the HSJ looks to award this to an organisation with a clear understanding of how they will need to adapt to create a viable long-term local health economy.
The judging panel, made up of a diverse range of highly influential and respected figures within the healthcare community, have shortlisted the ROH despite the tough competition from hundreds of excellent applicants. The Trust has been selected based on their ambition, visionary spirit and the demonstrable positive impact that they have had on patient and staff experiences within the healthcare sector.
The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital ranks among the top hospitals in the NHS for patient experience. They perform well in all national patient surveys, including the National Inpatient Survey and the Friend and Family Test. For the National Inpatient Survey, in the last three years, the Trust remained in the top 20% of trusts and has continued to improve. Last year, the ROH was highlighted as one of the Trust’s that had improved considerably more than expected and following an inspection from the Care Quality Commission (CQC), they had their rating improved to ‘Good’. In the past two years, the Trust has transformed their performance and made excellent progress in delivering Quality Priorities, including reducing the number of avoidable pressure ulcers, implementing and embedding a learning from deaths culture and reducing the number of formal complaints. The Trust is improving financial stability year on year; this includes successfully attaining their control total through maximising their income and reducing their costs. They work in partnership with the National Orthopaedic Alliance (NOA), the Birmingham and Solihull Transformation Partnership (STP) and the Birmingham and Solihull Orthopaedic Alliance (BSOLOA), as well as industry partners such as Stryker, who have supported them to introduce new treatments like robotic-assisted surgery and have helped them to optimise their hip and knee replacement pathways through their Jointcare programme. In May 2019 the Trust broke ground on a new complex that will provide four new operating theatres and a 23-bed ward, and enable them to treat an additional 2,500 local patients each year. This capital investment will support them and their partners to be more sustainable, meet demand and offer amazing care.
