Royal Orthopaedic Hospital appoints new Chief Executive

The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (ROH) is pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Hartland as its new substantive Chief Executive, following a rigorous and competitive recruitment process.

Matthew, who has been working with the Trust on secondment, has already played a pivotal role in shaping its future direction. He has led the development of a new Trust strategy, strengthened leadership across the organisation, and overseen significant improvements in performance and delivery of key targets.

Simon Page, Chair of the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, said:
"Matthew’s passion for patients, commitment to our people, and strong alignment with our values have been evident from the very beginning. The ROH, like the wider NHS, is navigating a period of both challenge and opportunity. Matthew will continue to drive the Trust forward, striving for excellence in patient care and ensuring that the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital maintains its outstanding reputation both locally and nationally."

Matthew will formally take up his role as Chief Executive in early October, subject to the usual pre-employment processes. Until then, he will continue to work with the Trust under his current secondment arrangements.

Speaking about his appointment, Matthew Hartland said:
"It is a privilege to be appointed Chief Executive of the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. I am proud of what we have achieved together so far, and I am excited to continue working with colleagues, patients, partners, and our community to build on this progress. Our focus will remain firmly on delivering the very best care for patients, supporting our exceptional staff, and strengthening the Trust for the future."

The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital is one of the largest specialist orthopaedic units in Europe, with a long-standing reputation for clinical excellence, innovation, and patient care.
