Osteoarthritis at the joint at the base of the thumb affects 21% of people over the age of 40 and 46% of people over the age of 80 years. It affects a person’s ability to work, to be independent, to care for others and mental wellbeing. Those seeking treatment suffer severe pain, and difficulty in completing simple everyday tasks.

The SCOOTT trial explores surgery versus conservative treatment approaches for ostearthritis of the thumb. There is a range of surgical and non-surgical treatment options, from painkillers, anti-inflammatory medicines, splints, steroid injections and exercise as well as trapeziectomy (the current gold standard treatment) and carpometacarpal joint replacement.

For more information about the clinical trial, visit: SCOOTT Trial - information for patients and participants

If you would like to be considered for this trial, please contact our team via phone or email.
